Samsung’s newest smartphone flagship is currently one of the top products in the high-end segment. It is a very slim device and despite the 4-inch screen it is not perceived as an over-sized phone. While most Apple-owners will designate this machine as an iPhone-rized clone, but once in use the owners will only appreciate the handling and top quality user interface (Android OS) compared to its main rival.
The screen is very clear and sharp (AMOLED 4″), only when used outside in full sunny conditions the screen becomes unreadable. The screen will rotate very quickly upon moving the device 90 or 180 degrees, watching YouTube movies on this absolute cracker of a screen becomes a delight unsurpassed in the industry so far.
Any Blackberry or Nokia user will quickly make the switch to the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 once they have viewed the capabilities of this screen, it’s just that awesome.
The camera (on the front of the phone) is also of very high standard and shoots video in 720p. While most smartphone buyers are not really interested in having these features on a cell phone, they are nice to have.
Swype is the Hype – or so they say at Samsung. As with all phones without a hardware keyboard, the software becomes even more important to control the device. It is not advisable though to use it in portrait mode, in landscape mode the ‘virtual keyboard’ is a dream. It takes some getting used to, but Swype knocks the socks off most users when it comes to ease of use and practicality.
There is no shortage of connectivity either, all Bluetooth connected devices worked without problems. This included in-car connectivity (Jabra & Parrot) as well as the built-in GPS using Google Maps (comes free with the device).
Using the device with all it’s functionality, bells and whistles, the battery of 1500 mAh will last just short of a day. So including the normal calls, 1 or two hours of internet per day, some 25-odd e-mail messages etc., that’s not a bad result.
The Samsung Galaxy S i9000 is currently one of the best all-rounders out there. It has one of the best screens available and will upload your HD videos to YouTube if required. The vast support from Android Market as well as the exclusive look and feel design of this wonderful product makes it a winner.
